Blessings or Curses

The Psalms begin with this pronouncement: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night” (Ps. 1:1, 2). Instead of blessings, both temporal and spiritual curses await those who follow the advice of the ungodly, consort with sinners, and then become teachers who mock at God and His Word. Conversely, both spiritual and temporal blessings await those who not only believe and live by the law of His Word, but delight in that law, meditating in it day and night in order to regulate their lives by its precepts.

What is true of individuals is true of nations. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD. . .” (Ps. 33:12). For any nation of people to be blessed, they, too, must walk in the ways of the Lord. To the extent any nation walks in the law of God, to that extent it will be blessed temporally with peace, prosperity, and health. If any nation establishes policies according to the advice of ungodly scoffers, then that nation will bring temporal curses upon itself through war, crime, poverty, disease, and suffering, resulting in misery for all its citizens.

The nation we have loved all our lives is rapidly changing. Instead of walking in God's ways, America is openly departing from the laws which made it great. Its leaders have little regard for God or His Word. Jesus Christ is being removed from our national life. Crime is rampant; nothing is sacred anymore. Immorality of every kind is openly practiced. People waste their money gambling, buy what
they do not need, borrow what they cannot repay, and expect their neighbors to pay their debts by electing leaders who pass laws to legalize such thievery. Can anyone really be surprised, then, that this nation is facing financial disaster?
